The Brief | Edition 4 | For Supply Chain Leaders
Supply chain leaders are dealing with new pressures on infrastructure, labour, and freight costs. The Brief is bringing you six developments supply chain professionals across the UK and Europe are watching, and what they mean for your strategy, workforce, and planning.
Midlands Rail Electrification Paused
The UK Government has paused the Midland mainline electrification (London–Sheffield), citing cost concerns. Industry bodies warn this could cost taxpayers £50–70 million in sunk expenses and jeopardise 5,000 associated rail supply jobs. The delay could undermine the future freight and decarbonisation goals.
What this means for you:
This pause may not have a big effect on your current operations right now, but it does show that public infrastructure delivery is becoming less predictable. It might be a good idea to go back and look at your contingency models if your long-term plans depended on more rail capacity. Now’s a good time to review modal flexibility and monitor how this decision affects freight planning nationally.
DRIVE35 Sparks £2.5B EV Manufacturing Surge
The UK Government has launched £2.5?billion under the DRIVE35 initiative to support EV manufacturing, gigafactories, and R&D over ten years, securing jobs and strengthening zero-emission supply chains.
What this means for you:
This change won't happen overnight, but it shows where long-term investment and skills are going. If your business is in the automotive, logistics, or advanced manufacturing industries, start looking for ways to get involved in the EV supply chain. This is something to keep an eye on and start getting ready for in terms of workforce planning and coming up with a new site strategy.
£11M Funded for Green Steel Innovation
Ionic Rare Earths secured £11?million in government-backed funding to expand its CirculaREEconomy initiative, which aims to scale steel recycling capabilities and advance domestic low-carbon materials production.
What this means for you:
While green steel and rare-earth recycling are still in their early stages of innovation, these sectors will present emerging opportunities. If sustainability is becoming a key differentiator for your customers, it’s worth exploring potential future partnerships or sourcing strategies, and keeping track of developments in this space to stay ahead of ESG demands before they become non-negotiable.
Logistics Skills Gap Deepens Post-Brexit
A new Tech.co Logistics Report reveals that 69% of UK logistics businesses are experiencing driver shortages that are impacting freight demand and on-time delivery. Meanwhile, 63% say driver recruitment and retention has stagnated or worsened over the past year, despite earlier signs of post-pandemic recovery. Many firms are ramping up recruiting and training to offset post-Brexit labour constraints.
What this means for you:
This is a familiar industry challenge that’s not going away any time soon. While you don’t need to overhaul recruitment overnight, consider whether your workforce strategy is resilient enough for peak periods. That could look like focusing internally on investing in upskilling or better shift planning, or partnering with specialist recruitment agencies or apprenticeships to strengthen recruitment pipelines so you’re not caught short when volumes spike.
EU Driver Rules & Border Delays Crimp Freight Flow
The recent return of border checks, especially at the German-Polish crossing, has caused longer wait times, driver frustrations, and delays in freight schedules. According to Deutsche Welle, haulage companies are now facing increased costs and operational stress from time-consuming customs inspections between EU member states.
What this means for you:
This is a reminder of how quickly things can get complicated when doing business across borders. If you do business within the EU, you should add extra time to your delivery schedules and talk to your partners about how they are handling the new border control measures. While not urgent for all, being proactive now can protect your service levels later.
