The Brief | Edition 2 | For Supply Chain Leaders

By Graeme Doyle

19.06.2025

The supply chain is evolving in real time, demanding constant adaptability from its leaders. We’re here to make that easier.

Every fortnight, The Brief breaks down what’s happening across the supply chain and, more importantly, what it means for your operations, strategy, and people. Here’s what leaders are talking about this week.

UK-U.S. Tariff Cuts and Ongoing Trade Talks

The U.S. has approved new tariff reductions on UK exports, including zero tariffs on aerospace goods and a 10% duty on up to 100,000 UK-manufactured vehicles. The agreement forms part of wider trade talks and is being welcomed as a sign of positive momentum for a broader UK–U.S. trade agreement ahead of full implementation by end-June?2025. Steel and aluminium tariffs remain unchanged at 25%, but both governments have committed to deepening trade ties.

What this means for you:

If you operate in aerospace or automotive, this opens a near-term opportunity to reassess U.S. export pricing, secure competitive positioning, and engage legal teams around evolving tariff rules. While not comprehensive yet, it’s a strategic window for margin improvement and deeper cross-border partnerships.

HS2 Delayed & Under Review

The UK government has formally delayed HS2’s Phase 2 completion beyond 2033, citing financial mismanagement and overruns exceeding £100 billion. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has proposed a ‘reset plan’ to refocus delivery on core priorities while overhauling project governance.

What this means for you:

If your growth plans or freight modelling depended on HS2 capacity, you’ll need to reroute your expectations. Explore existing infrastructure alternatives, and look to local rail upgrades, road freight optimisation, or intermodal hubs that are progressing on time. As HS2 pivots to new delivery models, stay alert to new public procurement frameworks or private-public partnerships tied to the reset plan’s revised scope.

£400?Million Boost for Offshore Wind Logistics

The Crown Estate is investing £400 million to accelerate the development of UK port infrastructure to support floating offshore wind farms. This includes upgrades to accommodate new turbine technology, increased demand for heavy-lift capacity, and supply chain resilience across coastal logistics networks.

What this means for you:

This is a prime moment to explore involvement in renewables logistics. Infrastructure upgrades will create new tenders, while Tier 1 energy developers will be actively sourcing transport and equipment partners. If you’re operating near coastal hubs, assess your capacity for oversized or heavy-lift logistics.

Red Sea Disruption Keeps Pressures High

Global container shipping is under renewed pressure as tensions in the Middle East escalate following Israeli strikes on Iran. Major carriers, including Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, have diverted vessels away from the Red Sea and Strait of Hormuz, adding time and cost to key global trade routes. With Iran threatening to close the Strait, a key shipping lane for energy and cargo, the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has issued a heightened risk alert. Insurers are raising premiums, and the threat of regional disruption is now considered ongoing.

What this means for you:

Expect continued volatility in shipping routes, schedules, and costs. This is a good time to review any exposure to Red Sea lanes and engage with freight partners on contingency options. If your business relies on time-critical shipments, explore alternate routes and prioritise shipments requiring the most resilience. Invest in proactive customer communication and dynamic planning tools to navigate uncertainty and risks here more confidently.

Treefera Raises $30?Million to Scale First-Mile ESG Tracking

London-based Treefera raised $30 million to expand its AI-driven ESG monitoring platform. The system uses satellite data, AI models, and drone imagery to verify carbon metrics, biodiversity impact, and supply chain origins, primarily at the first mile (farms, forests, and mines).

What this means for you:

ESG regulations are tightening, becoming digitally traceable, and visible to your customers. Tools like Treefera provide critical supply chain visibility. Now is the time to audit your own first-mile data, engage partners on sustainability practices, and consider integrating traceability platforms that enhance compliance and credibility with customers.

Amazon Expands "Agentic" AI in Logistics

Amazon is rolling out “agentic AI” tools across its logistics network, enabling multi-task warehouse robots, predictive route mapping, and real-time trailer scheduling. This is with the aim of lowering emissions and fulfilment times with robots that adapt to tasks rather than run rigid programmes.

What this means for you:

With agentic AI becoming more prominent across large-scale supply chains, supply chain leaders could benefit from identifying use cases and high-impact areas like dock scheduling or inventory routing where AI can be piloted. It’s also important to consider workforce planning if this is something you’d like to progress with in your organisation to ensure employees are trained to work alongside AI, using insights to make better, faster decisions.

Insights for Supply Chain leaders

The foundations of supply chains are evolving fast, with global trade negotiations, ESG traceability, and next-gen AI primed to shift the industry landscape. Organisations will need to build resilience and the frameworks to adapt now to avoid reacting later.

We’ll be back in two weeks with The Brief. Until then, feel free to share this with your team or reach out if there’s something you’d like us to cover next.
