An interim manager can be described as an all-in-one project manager, consultant and senior executive working at or near board level. Many have chosen interim management as a career and enjoy the challenges that it brings, as well as the variety and flexibility that it offers. They are used to moving into challenging situations and providing immediate solutions to their clients.
Interim Managers can fill a variety of roles ranging from managing change to one off essential projects to gap management where, for example, there has been unplanned absence or a temporary increase in volume.
More and more companies are now using interim managers for a variety of reasons:
• Speed of recruitment gives an organisation the flexibility to respond to market forces and to implement key decisions rapidly in days rather than months.
• Hands-on managers are often committed to deliver results and with their considerable expertise they are able to transfer both specialised knowledge and ideas on best practice.
• The objectivity and loyalty from having no political baggage nor personal agenda for advancement in the client organisation. The majority of interim managers are not seeking a permanent position so they do not pose a threat to the promotion prospects of others.
• Interim managers tend to be overqualified and can hit the ground running. They can deliver virtually from day one, create good working relationships and deliver results.
• They can work 2 days a week or on projects full-time for over 12 months.
• Cost with recruiting an interim manager for a short period of time compares favourably with the cost of a permanent manager. Companies recruit interims on a fixed overhead for a specific period of time whereas with permanent staff National Insurance, Pensions, Holidays, Sickness, PAYE, Recruitment Costs, etc all have to be taken into account.
